All About Coffee Pots

A coffee pot is a container to brew fresh coffee. There are many types of coffee pots. The traditional coffee pot called a percolator is made of metal and sits directly on the source of heat. Ground coffee is placed in a small internal basket sitting on a funnel; boiling water is forced through this repeatedly to soak the coffee, thus producing an extract which becomes more concentrated as the coffee brews.

The modern coffee maker as first invented in Paris in 1818 by a gentleman named Laurens. This was the first percolator type design. Due to the widespread usage by American frontiersmen it was called the Cowboy pot. Over the next one hundred and fifty years the percolator based coffee pots continued to be developed.

A major advancement came in the 1960’s when the modern filter type coffee maker was developed. It is surprising to know that the press pot came later than the vac-pot. It is a much simpler design than a vacuum brewer. Although the concept of press brewing system was around, the technology to make a tight enough fitting filter was not. It was in 1930 that the stainless steel filter with a metal body came up.

Apart from these modern appliances for making coffee traditional coffee pots of other regions like Turkish Ibriks or Italian Moka pots are popular with coffee connoisseurs. The different kinds of pots for making coffee are percolators, drips, electric coffee makers, plunges and vacuums. The coffee pot used for serving could be plastic, glass, ceramic, or thermos carafe. Known coffee pot manufacturers are Black & Decker, Bodum, Bonjour, Braun, Bunn, Cuisinart, Capresso, DeLonghi, Gaggia, Hamilton Beach, Keurig, Kitchen Aid, Krups, Mr Coffee, Saeco, Sunbeam and Thermos Nissan.
